Elements and Performance Criteria
- Prepare client and environment for procedure
- Verify request for procedure
- Review client's medical records for polysomnographic (PSG) results
- Review and action client's pathology results as required
- Provide correct environment for procedure
- Ensure equipment and materials selected are clean and in working order
- Reassure and explain procedure to client and obtain client consent/agreement as required
- Provide opportunities for client to ask questions and discuss areas of concern
- Instruct client to complete pre-procedure questionnaire
- Attach monitoring equipment
- Utilise personal protective equipment in accordance with standard and additional precautions
- Conduct head measurement to verify sites for electrode placement according to current standards and organisation policies and procedures
- Prepare client's skin for the application of electrodes in accordance with infection control guidelines and client needs
- Position and apply correctly electrodes according to current standards and organisation policies and procedures
- Attach electrodes to headbox
- Perform procedure
- Instruct client to begin
- Perform required polygraph and client calibrations
- Complete document at commencement of procedure in accordance with organisation policies and procedures
- Recognise and note sleep stages according to criteria
- Monitor and document client's behaviour throughout procedure
- Determine contraindicated behaviour and provide intervention, as required
- Identify and respond to clinical emergencies in accordance with organisation emergency procedures
- End procedure
- End procedure according to recommended guidelines
- Remove leads and electrodes from client and wash off paste/gel
- Provide client with assistance as required, on completion of the procedure
- Instruct client to complete post-procedure questionnaire
- Confirm timely follow up with referring doctor for results
- Clean and store electrodes in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines
- Dispose of disposable electrodes and other materials in accordance with waste management procedures
- Re stock equipment and materials
- Clean and restore environment
- Complete, print and present report to specialist for review
